Polysomnography/Sleep Study

Diagnosing sleep disorders

OVERVIEW
Polysomnography (PSG) is a study or test done while you’re fully asleep. A doctor will observe you as you sleep, record data about your sleep patterns, and may identify any sleep disorders.

KEY FACTS

  • There are 120 different kinds of sleep-wake disorders.
  • Various studies worldwide have shown the prevalence of insomnia in 10%–30% of the population, some even as high as 50%–60%. [Source: NIH]

What is Polysomnography (PSG) or Sleep Study?

Polysomnography is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to evaluate sleep disorders and monitor various physiological parameters during sleep. It involves recording several body functions simultaneously, such as brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate, and breathing patterns.

It is a diagnostic study aimed at monitoring sleep parameters for the whole night that allows our pulmonologists to accurately diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment options for sleep-related issues.

The parameters measured are the following:
- Nasal airflow
- Brain waves/EEG
- Limb Movements
- Eye movements
- Chest & abdomen movements
- Spo2 – oxygen levels

The quality of sleep, respiratory events during sleep, movements during sleep and oxygen level fluctuations during sleep can be recorded and analyzed for any sleep disorders in clinically suspected patients.

Why do I need a polysomnography?

Sleep disorders can significantly impact your overall health and quality of life. Polysomnography plays a crucial role in identifying and understanding these disorders by providing detailed information about your sleep patterns.

By monitoring various physiological parameters, our pulmonologists can diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders, including:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
- Narcolepsy
- Insomnia
- Parasomnias

Indications of Polysomnography

- Snoring
- Daytime fatigue
- Daytime sleepiness
- Obesity (BMI greater 27) with specific sleep symptoms
- Excessive movements during sleep
- Noctutria: Urination over night (more than 0 times
- Heart ailments with any sleep symptom
- Recurrent stroke
- Screening for sleep apnea before bariatric surgery

How can polysomnography help you?

By undergoing polysomnography, you take a significant step toward understanding and addressing your sleep-related issues.
